2023 Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration

As a member of the Coalition for Equality, PHA is involved in planning and assisting with the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration held in Pekin.  2023 marked The Coalition for Equality’s 30th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration, held at Grace United Methodist Church.  After 2 years of adjustments due to CoVID-19, it was decided that a combined presentation style would be offered– three live sessions held in person, and also three live streaming sessions during the same time. Students currently enrolled in 3rd and 6th grade within District 108 were invited to participate, via in person, or virtually. A total of 1,300 students were in attendance.  All Students were provided a light breakfast/snack, (including those tuning in virtually).  All Teachers participating (including those tuning in virtually) were also provided a set of diversity-themed books to keep in their classrooms.  Pam Purnell, a storyteller, musician, and poet was the Speaker for this event, and was able to deliver her message in a fun and energetic manner.
